Halloween

We experienced lots of Halloweeny goodness this year. For instance, we:

-Attended a lecture on bats... got to see some live! (Did you know they make up 1/4 of the total mammal population of the world?)
-Laura and Peetie visited and we shopped for costume raw materials. (And ate fancy cheese!)
-Carved pumpkins, made pumpkin pie and hot mulled wine.
-Took Nanaiya trick-or-treating downtown. She makes an adorable ladybug. (Learned that most people do not know that 2 year olds shouldn't have gum and jawbreakers.)
-Passed out candy and had a two-person Monster Mash dance party in the kitchen.
-Dressed up and went downtown.

Here are some pictures (taken from Clay's journal):

My pumpkin

My (homemade) costume

There were lots of bees downtown. =)

Clay was a red-neck!!

Complete with a beer-gut!

Darth Vader in a tutu seemed pretty damn funny after hot mulled wine and a long island iced tea!

The best costume! This guy stands out in the picture, but in the dark he blended in startlingly well with that bush!

At The Red. The Victorian gothic atmosphere felt appropriate for the holiday. Also, a great place to people-watch without feeling like another cow in a herd.

I wish they hadn't blocked off so much of the street this year. It really forced people to keep walking. And it was frustrating to have to walk all the way around barriers to get to the other side of the street.

Other than that, SC Halloween left me feeling sated with the holiday. This town does Halloween very, very well. In fact, sometimes I think the town confuses regular days with Halloween.

Now it is November, which means holiday season has begun!! I love this time of year! Fall and winter mean soup, hot drinks, scarves, parades, families starting to make time for each other, Christmas music... Corinna and I were walking to The Attic tonight when I realized that the little clouds in front of my face were my breath lingering in the air!!! Cold weather! (California cold, at least!) I hope this means that real fall weather is on the horizon. The leaves have been falling, but the temperature hasn't quite caught up.

Corinna, Alyssa and I finally hung out. We shared two pots of (the best) jasmine tea (ever!) For green tea lovers, I highly recommend The Attic's jasmine, with honey. All three of us currently live with and spend much of our free time with our significant others. It was nice to hang out and catch up. We also met Alyssa's cat, Virginia. She's a pouncing purr box... she made me want to own a cat. =)

ooh, I LOVE learning about bats! there is an outstanding book (probably in your library) by merlin tuttle called america's neighborhood bats. check it out!

a few years ago I got [info]joanofarrgh a membership to bat conservation international as a christmas gift -- socially responsible and wacky! -- and I still use my bat totebag everywhere. bats are great.

What a fantastic gift!

I was already interested in bats, but attending the lecture convinced me that they are truly amazing creatures! I couldn't believe how integral they are to our ecosystem!
I will definitely check out the book. Thanks for the recommendation!

I'm excited to spread the joy of merlin tuttle! he is one dedicated and passionate guy. check out the bat conservation int'l website too. you can adopt a bat, send an e-card, or simply stock up on your bat-themed t-shirts.

I just reserved the book at SCPL. I can't wait to read it! It's always nice to receive a non-fiction recommendation. People hardly ever recommend non-fiction, which is sad because so much of it is junk and its hard to weed through everything alone!

That tea was absolutely lovely. I'd never known jasmine tea could be so transcendent. While domestic significant otherhood is wonderful, girls' night out should never be discounted.

Happy Soup Weather!
